Recommendation beyond industry standard

News Recommendation

The Challenge

Many publishers, in particular in the area of daily and broadsheet publishing, recognize that their readers are increasingly satisfying their information requirements via the Internet. This is reflected in decreasing subscriber numbers and consequently reduced income from advertising. Although almost all publishers have responded with Internet versions of their publications, their readers can switch supplier with a simple mouse click. In contrast to the classical newspaper subscription, it is significantly more important to capture the readers’ attention with the Internet presence. Publishers face the challenge of providing a convincing Internet offer and retaining their customers with particularly interesting content and services.

Personalized recommendation systems

Personalized recommendation systems reveal their true value to the user in situations where content is changing rapidly, it is difficult to render on the Internet or where the sheer volume limits the usefulness of a simple search. Recommendation systems are increasingly being deployed today in order to identify the interesting content for a user. These systems collect data during a user’s session and deliver interesting content based on the automatically generated user profile.  In addition, the Internet poses the problem of rendering the content on a monitor or even on a mobile end device. For online newspapers in particular, this means extensive limitations relative to the printed version – for reader and publisher alike.  Content must be exceptionally targeted on the initial pages or enhanced with further media content to capture and retain the awareness of the reader before he or she “clicks away.” This is the premier aim of recommendation.

YOOCHOOSE News Recommendation

The YOOCHOOSE Recommendation Engine offers the optimal solution for a targeted delivery of the numerous and daily altering content to the reader. The algorithms for recommendation and profile generation are specially adapted to the requirements of the online newspaper. The experience gained by YOOCHOOSE in the media recommendation field allow YOOCHOOSE to easily integrate picture or video into the recommendation. This enables publishers to increase the attractiveness of their online offer to their users, making it possible to leverage the opportunities of the Internet relative to those of the print version. Another innovative area in which the YOOCHOOSE Recommendation Engine can be implemented is in the push channel. Particularly important news about which the reader would like to be immediately informed can be found in the push channel. Push channel news can usually only be accessed when a subscription to a topic area exists or via the manual input of a user profile. With the YOOCHOOSE solution, particularly interesting content can be identified on the basis of the dynamically generated user profile and immediately released to the reader. The time-consuming configuration and maintenance of the personal profile by the user is no longer necessary with this approach. The personalized newspaper, which dynamically responds to the individual reader's preferences, is brought within the reach of publishers with the YOOCHOOSE Recommendation solution.

Advantages of YOOCHOOSE Recommendation

Through the personalization and recommendation of content, the reader interest can be held for a longer period of time, leading to increased time on the publisher's page and consequently to higher advertising income. In addition, reader retention is increased with the use of the YOOCHOOSE Recommendation solution as the user cannot simply take his or her profile to an alternative publication. Thus, the implementation of the YOOCHOOSE solution in the publishing field brings significant advantages to both publisher and reader, making the challenge of switching from the classic print media to the new Internet-based service beneficial and manageable.
